Bio and CV

Bio

Mari Lotherington is a set and costume designer working primarily with stage performance. Her artistic practice is based on collaborative processes through which she can design for the desired theme, format and audience which varies from project to project. She also branches out to exhibition design and film work on occasion. In 2022 she designed her first large scale interactive sensorial exhibition, Who Are You in a World on Fire? at the Arctic University Museum of Norway. The exhibition continues to receive great reviews from critics and audiences.

Although Lotherington is based in Oslo, she has an international connection having lived several years abroad in the USA, England and France. She has a bachelors degree in Theatre and Performance Design from Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, graduating in 2013, and a two year Masters in Theatre, specialising in scenography, from Oslo National Academy of the Arts, graduating in 2017. In 2012 she did her work placement at Die Staatstheater Stuttgart in Germany under the acclaimed scenographer Katrin Nottrodt.

In 2022 the play Utvik Senior by Rimfrost Productions won the “Årets Hedda” prestige prize at the Norwegian Hedda Awards. The play was also nominated for Best Performance and Best Dramatic Text by Nina Wester who also directed the show. Lotherington designed set and costumes for Utvik Senior, which were an integral part of the storytelling and dramaturgy of the play. The same year Pitbullterje og kampen mot barnevernet by Hålogaland Teater was awarded a nomination for Best Performance for Young Audiences. Lotherington also served as set and costume designer on this production.

The children’s play Tobias og dagen det smalt (Tobias and the day of the explosion) also by Rimfrost Productions and designed by Lotherington, was awarded the Hedda prize for Best Children’s Performance in 2018. The play has toured since, playing over 200 performances and has had a collaboration with Riksteatret.

In addition, Lotherington has received several grants from the Norwegian Arts Council since the beginning of her career in 2013, and in 2013 she won the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Design Prize resulting in her work on the play “Scrappers” at Liverpool Playhouse. In 2017 she was named the Artist Profile for the Arctic Arts Festival, for which she designed several productions.
